I am particularly interested in understanding the spatiotemporal variability of the morphology and sedimentology, i.e. the surficial sediment grain-size distribution, in response to different hydrodynamic drivers and scenarios. Process-based morphodynamic models with multiple sediment fractions are applied at barrier island systems in the Wadden Sea and at the Weser estuary. At barrier island tidal inlets, bypassing and pathways of distinct sand fractions have been distinguished. Morphodynamic models are applied to estimate adaptation timescales of the morphology and the surface sedimentology from post-storm to fair-weather conditions. Within the current project FAUST, I study the effect of bedforms on estuarine sediment dynamics.
