Short description:

Changes in the environmental conditions due to sea level fluctuations, increase in storminess, euthrophication, exploitation of resources or construction works are firstly reflected in the coastal areas. The shallow water environments of the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig Holstein are an alteration of sandy environments offshore lowlands and hard bottom substrates offshore active cliffs. The latter are partly covered with stones of different size and with dif-ferent spatial distribution. Depending on the exposure of the coastline, these relict sediments, which are an indicator of ongoing erosion and reworking of glacial deposits, can be observed down to 20 m water depth. Especially stones, which have been exploited for more than 100 years until 1976, are an extremely valuable habitat, recognized by several national and inter-national regulations and directives. The ascertainment of stones, their impact on the seafloor and their behaviour as an ecological habitat due to environmental changes is the main objec-tive of this research program.

The joint research project "STopP“ is one of five projects which are funded in the framework of the call “Coastal Sea Research in the North and Baltic Sea.” which is part the FONA-program (Forschung für nachhaltige Entwicklung” of the German Federal Ministry of Educa-tion and Research.) STopP is coordinated by the national park administration of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
The influence of sediment characteristics, sediment distribution pattern and hydrological forc-ing on species composition and distribution is investigated. An evaluation is completed through a combination with statistical habitat models, ecological network analyses and hydrodynamic models and those abiotic factors leading to certain habitats and specific species communities. The joint research project aims to describe for the first time for the German North Sea coast those sceneries ecosystems that play a key role in the system sediment - benthos - top-predator. In this way an essential precondition for the overall assessment of the ecological status of marine ecosystems is  accomplished as well as for the implementation of national and international marine protection policies. It is planned to develop and to evaluate describing parameters  for descriptors "sea floor integrity ", "wood webs" , and "biodiversity" of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
In a sub-project, IfG carries out sediment and habitat mapping based on side scan sonar, multibeam echo sounder and sub bottom profiler techniques. Data are calibrated by sediment sampling and analyses as well as underwater video observations. Focus area is Amrum Bank (North Sea).

Short description

The objective of SEDINO is a full coverage high resolution spatial sedi-mentological mapping of selected sites in the German EEZ of the North- and Baltic Sea with different hydro-acoustic (Side-Scan Sonar, parametric sub-bottom profiler) and optical meth-ods. Special focus is given to marine protected areas in the Baltic Sea (Odra Bank, Adler Ground, Kadet Channel and Fehmarn Belt, https://www.bfn.de/0314_meeresschutzgebiete+M52087573ab0.html) and North Sea (East-ern German Bight and Sylt Outer Reef (https://www.bfn.de/0314_meeresschutzgebiete+M52087573ab0.html). Besides Sediment distribution patterns the spatial and temporal distribution and dynamics of bedforms from small (dm) to macro scale (km) and the interaction with benthic organisms is investigated.

Short description: Shallow water coastal environments built up of boulder clay are wide-spread in the Baltic Sea. Due to relative sea level rise and coastal retreat they are mostly under abrasion, showing a high variability in sediment distribution patterns and colonization by numerous marine species. To identify and classify these seabed types respecting habitats, a multi-method investigation is applied by using side-scan sonar backscatter data, acoustic ground discrimination data, parametric echosounder data as well as grain size parameters. Calibration of backscatter data is supported by underwater video observations. This project, to be carried out in the low energy environment of Flensburg Fjord is a follow up of previously mapped areas (2009 – 2014) in the territorial waters of the Baltic Sea of Schleswig-Holstein (see previous projects).

Short description

The State Agency of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas is collect-ing a huge amount of hydroacoustic data with their system “Echo Plus” during their monitoring cruises in the North Sea and Baltic Sea which are carried out several times/year during different seasons. These Echo Plus data might be used to classify the seafloor sediment properties and to detect even different kinds of seafloor habitats. However, this needs cali-bration and comparison with other hydroacoustic devices under controlled conditions.
