Coastal geology and sedimentology

We work on sedimentological processes in the coastal area. We consider transport processes on many spatial and temporal scales: from the microscopic interaction of turbulent motion and individual particles to the mesoscale movement of bedforms to macroscale seasonal adaptations of beach profiles and tidal channels to the evolution of coastal sections and estuaries over decades.

We collect observation data, carry out laboratory experiments and use numerical models to work on various interdisciplinary topics:

  •         Geology, sedimentology and morphodynamics of shelf and coastal systems
  •         Development of habitats on the sea floor
  •         Dynamics of suspended matter and fluid mud in estuaries
  •         Formation, development and hydraulic effects of bedforms
  •         Human impact on coastal systems
  •         Submarine groundwater discharge
